Training and Development Programme

The 2007/8 training and development programme includes an excellent range of courses that offer high quality learning to provide skills and knowledge that will help you in your role of working with young people, as well as your personal development and career progression.

This provision includes courses for:

  • School and college careers and work-related learning co-ordinators
  • Tutors, teachers, learning mentors
  • Managers with responsibility for Connexions
  • Work-based learning providers
  • Other Connexions partners.

Last year over 1,000 delegates benefited from attending our courses and you will see some of their quotes throughout this brochure. We expect demand to be high again this year, so have a look and, see which courses are suitable for you, and make sure that you book early to secure your place.

“It is good to work at a conference for an organisation that commits itself to investing in high quality support for CEG in schools, colleges and work-based training. Teachers and tutors in the Better Choices area benefit from a comprehensive programme of INSET opportunities, access to a team of Development Advisers who can assist with curriculum planning and review, and access to one of the best professional qualifications for careers teachers in the country.”
David Andrews OBE, CEG Consultant and Trainer, speaking at Better Choices CEG Conference.

Application procedure

Decide which course(s) you are interested in. All are listed here and you can apply by e-mail. Applications will be required to be returned at least 2 weeks prior to each event and confirmation letters (or ‘sorry no places left’) will be sent out at least ten days before the course.

These courses are only available to those working in the Manchester, Rochdale, Salford, Tameside and Trafford areas.

As there will be a finite number of places on each course, places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

N.B. All courses are free of charge and are available to all staff working with Connexions, not just school/college staff.

See the target group information for each course to decide on suitability.

Location of courses

Better Choices Ltd will endeavour to spread the provision of courses across the whole area. However, location is often affected by the size of venue, car parking and the suitability of facilities.

Applications for courses are not, therefore, restricted to staff working in the area where the course is located.

  • Induction for new careers co-ordinators - days one and two.

For the above courses we will reimburse supply cover costs to schools and colleges on a fixed rate basis of half-day = £70.00; one day = £140.00.

The procedure for re-claiming supply cover is as follows:

  • Pay for the supply teacher, to the organisation or individual, whichever is applicable.
  • Return the Better Choices Ltd, CLAIM FORM, which will be given out to those attending each course. Please note, that in order to claim cover, the institution must send proof, with an invoice to Better Choices Ltd, that the amount has actually been expended.
