Connexions and confidentiality

Connexions helps young people achieve their full potential. They use Connexions on a voluntary basis, and its impartiality and confidentiality and range of expertise are the primary reasons they turn to the service for information, advice and guidance.

Once a young person has made contact with Connexions, they’ll need to provide some basic information about themselves like their contact details and educational background as this enables our Connexions Advisers to give relevant information, advice and guidance on career options.

Some young people need more help to achieve their potential - they may have problems with finding adequate housing, with drugs abuse or mental health, or perhaps in coming to terms with disruptions in the family. Connexions Advisers need to know about these in order to give effective help. When it is within their scope, they'll provide that advice, but if they feel specialist support is needed, they will discuss the options with the person seeking guidance, and with the young person’s consent make appropriate referrals.

Everyone using Connexions has the right to confidentiality. However, where there are exceptional circumstances, such as a significant threat to life, the Connexions Adviser will pass on appropriate information to the authorities. This will be made clear to the young person at the outset.

Connexions is obliged to operate within the Human Rights Act and the Data Protection Act in their work with young people.
