24:7 was chosen to be the focus of our summer fundraising, and the perfect day to tell the world that Samaritans are there to answer calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year. We are the only service which is always there for people who need emotional support, whether by telephone, email, letter or face to face.

The United Nations' (UN) International Youth Day is celebrated on August 12 each year to recognize efforts of the world's youth in enhancing global society. It also aims to promote ways to engage them in becoming more actively involved in making positive contributions to their communities.

On 18 December 2009, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution proclaiming the year commencing on 12 August 2010 as the : Dialogue and Mutual Understanding. The International Year is about advancing the full and effective participation of youth in all aspects of society. We encourage all sectors of society to work in partnership with youth and youth organizations to better understand their needs and concerns and to recognize the contributions that they can make to society.
Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games

The inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore from 14 to 26 August will seek to inspire youth around the world to embrace, embody and express the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect.
The organisers estimate:
3,600 young athletes between 14 and 18 years of age
5,000 young athletes and officials
205 National Olympic Committees
1,200 media representatives
20,000 local and international volunteers
370,000 spectators
26 sports and culture & education programmes
