Case Study

An 18 year old from Little Hulton who left Harrop Fold High School in 2006 went into the Connexions Centre in Walkden looking for hairdressing jobs.  Connexions had recently had a local employer Hair Shac place a vacancy for an apprentice.

On her trial day the salon's head showers broke and left the salon with limited water.  The employers, Sam Jarvis and Andrea Cooper, stated that she showed, ''bags of initiative, enthusiasm and excellent professionalism for a young lady on her first day of work in those kind of unforeseen circumstances.  From this we decided she would make a dedicated member of our team and we employed her full-time''.

She was set up with Skills Solution who offered her the chance to do a NVQ level 2 in Hairdressing which she has achieved and is now working towards her Level 3 in Hairdressing with the support from her employers.

She stated, ''I am very happy that I came to Connexions as I wouldn't have seen the job otherwise. The staff at Walkden  were very helpful.  I have always contacted my Connexions Assistant Lauren and she always goes out of her way to help me in any way she can if I have any problems''.

From the success of her appointment, Hair Shac decided to take on another school leaver, from Walkden. She is currently working towards a NVQ 2 in Hairdressing as part of the Learning Agreement Pilot and is doing very well.
